Americans Claim They Are Confused About Tipping Etiquette

Complaining about tipping is a favorite custom in America. Tipping has become a new reality and many consumers are not happy about it. After the pandemic, tipping has increased, and it is now expected in more places. Many people feel confused and unsure about when and how much to tip.

Consumers are frustrated with automated tablets suggesting different tip options and service charges added to bills. As a result, many people feel a sense of “tip fatigue.”

Inflation has made tipping a mess

Part of the reason why tipping has become more prevalent is due to the Great Resignation’s labor shortage and wage stagnation. Tipped workers are particularly affected due to low direct wage payment by employers. The inflation has made it difficult for employers to offer higher wages, leaving them to rely on customer tips to compensate for low wages.

Consumers are also affected by inflation and are less able or willing to tip extra. Many Americans remain financially anxious, leading to them being less prone to tipping.

It is unlikely that tipping will leave American society anytime soon. With the increase in tipping, people remain divided on tipping etiquette for different scenarios, such as food delivery, taxis, coffee, and fast-casual restaurants.
