Is Success Limited to Financial Wealth?

Financial Management and Success

The holiday season is a time for reflection and introspection. I often find myself reflecting upon my accomplishments and setting new goals for the future. This time of year also serves as a reminder of my parents and their influence on me. After losing both of them, I frequently think about their successes and the impact they had on me. As I update my personal portfolio and manage my other investments, I wonder if money is the only measure of success.

While my parents achieved a certain degree of financial success, I am reminded that my mother was much more than her net worth. The passing of both my parents has made me ponder what success truly means. I urge you to consider all your qualities, not just the ones related to money and finances.

Success isn’t just about financial gain, but also about giving back to society, being a good parent, neighbor, friend, contributing to charity, volunteering, working hard, physical fitness, and continuous learning. While we all may have our own lists of what success means, we often overlook non-monetary successes. It’s essential to evaluate whether money is truly the only measure of success for ourselves.

Although it is a common belief in Western cultures that money defines success, there is little evidence to suggest that it leads to greater happiness. Success should be measured by living a life aligned with your values. Hanan Harchol and Rabbi Leora Kaye have shared a valuable teaching from the Jewish faith that emphasizes contentment with what you have as a measure of wealth.

Time is finite, and we must make the most of it. Spending extra time earning a few more dollars instead of enjoying precious moments with loved ones is a trade-off to consider carefully. While money may be one measure of success, it should not be the only measure.

Success is not just about money but about finding your purpose in life, having control, and making a contribution. A mother coaching soccer or a community volunteer donating time and effort are examples of non-monetary successes. Every job makes a contribution, and doing it competently and joyfully can make a person successful.

In conclusion, don’t get caught up in simply keeping up with the financial status of others. Success is multifaceted, and money isn’t the only measure of it. Contentment, contribution, and living a life aligned with your values are equally, if not more, important.
